Dirt Work in This Valley Is Its Own Trade
You can't price Lycoming County ground from a truck window. This is the largest county in Pennsylvania by land area — nearly 1,229 square miles of ridge-and-valley terrain where the West Branch of the Susquehanna runs along the foot of Bald Eagle Mountain. The upland soils here are USDA-mapped Weikert and Berks channery silt loams weathered straight out of shale, and on the Weikert ground that covers our hillsides, bedrock can sit less than 20 inches below the surface. Wooded slopes commonly run 25% and steeper. A contractor who quotes your job like it's deep, soft loam finds ledge on day one — and suddenly the price isn't the price.
Water is the other half of the trade. Williamsport averages more than 40 inches of precipitation a year, and this valley's history is written by its creeks: the 1996 flood ran roughly two feet higher on Lycoming Creek than Agnes had and took six lives, and the 2011 storm set the record crest on Loyalsock Creek. The Army Corps levee has guarded the city's river frontage since 1955 — but it protects against the river, not the water falling on your lot. Add regional design frost depths that run roughly 24 to 48 inches, and you have a place where grading, drainage, and trench depth are local knowledge, not line items on a national template.
How We Work
The process is simple, and it's the same on every job:
- We walk the site before we price it. Soil, slope, access, and water get looked at in person, free, before a number goes on paper.
- Estimates are itemized. Stumps, hauling, rock handling, erosion controls, and permits are line items you can compare quote-to-quote — not assumptions buried in a round number.
- We handle PA One Call. Filing the 811 request and waiting for utility marks before digging is the excavator's legal responsibility, and we treat it that way. It's our job, not yours.
- Calls come back the same day. The loudest complaint about contractors in this valley is silence. Call (570) 555-0134 and you'll hear back today — even when the honest answer is "that's not our kind of work."
What We Don't Do
An honest scope matters as much as a sharp price, so here is where our work ends:
- Arborist tree work. We clear land — brush, stumps, and trees coming down as part of a lot or right-of-way. We don't climb, prune, or take a big maple off your roofline. That's a job for a tree service, and we'll say so on the first call.
- Basement waterproofing membranes. Interior sealing and membrane systems are a waterproofer's trade. Our side of the problem is outside the wall — regrading, french drains, and downspout tie-ins that stop water before it reaches the foundation. Often that solves it; when it won't, we'll tell you straight.
